An unexpected illness, death in the family, or other serious emergency can create a financial problem quickly. For federal and postal employees, there is a lesser-known resource that may be able to help: FEEA emergency loans.
The Federal Employee Education and Assistance Fund, known as FEEA, is an independent nonprofit organization. It was established in 1986 to assist civilian federal and postal employees and their families. It is not part of the federal government and its programs are not federal employee benefits.
What FEEA Emergency Loans Provide
FEEA’s emergency loan program is intended for specific hardships rather than everyday expenses or general financial needs.
Qualifying situations can include:
- Serious illness or injury involving the employee or an immediate family member
- The death of an immediate family member
- Significant damage to a primary residence caused by a natural disaster
- Certain situations involving domestic violence
The regular loan limit is currently $2,000. The loans carry no interest and no fees.
FEEA says it has provided more than 13,000 emergency loans since the program began.
There’s also an important difference between these loans and a typical personal loan. Approved funds generally go directly to the creditor rather than simply being deposited into the employee’s bank account. Depending on the circumstances, that could include payments for rent, utilities, funeral expenses, uncovered medical bills or certain emergency travel costs.
Disaster Assistance Is Available Separately
FEEA also operates a disaster relief program for eligible federal and postal employees affected by presidentially declared disasters.
The current maximum disaster grant is $500. Depending on the situation, the money can help with expenses such as temporary lodging, major home repairs not covered by insurance or replacement beds.
According to FEEA, more than 14,000 disaster grants have been provided since 1986.
FEEA Helps With More Than Emergencies
Financial assistance isn’t limited to employees dealing with a crisis.
FEEA also operates a scholarship program offering merit-based awards to eligible federal employees, spouses, and dependents. For 2026, scholarships ranged from $1,000 to $5,000.
The organization says it has awarded more than 11,000 scholarships since 1986.
FEEA also provides free K-12 tutoring for qualifying lower-income federal families and operates childcare subsidy programs for several federal agencies through its childcare-services subsidiary.
Who Is Eligible for an Emergency Loan?
FEEA emergency loans are generally available to full- or part-time permanent federal civilian and postal employees with more than one year of federal service.
The employee must also be dealing with a hardship that falls within FEEA’s eligibility requirements. Generally, the qualifying event must have occurred within the six months before the application.
Temporary, seasonal and contract employees aren’t eligible for the emergency loan program.
So this isn’t a general-purpose borrowing option. FEEA’s loans are specifically designed to provide assistance when a qualifying emergency creates an immediate financial hardship.
Why Federal Employees Should Know About FEEA
FEEA isn’t a federal benefit, but it is a resource specifically designed for federal and postal employees.
Knowing about it before an emergency happens could give an employee another option besides putting an unexpected expense on a credit card, taking out a high-interest loan or allowing a temporary financial problem to become something much larger.
FEEA has been helping federal families for decades, but its relatively low profile means many employees don’t learn about the organization until they’re already facing a crisis.
Current eligibility rules, application requirements and information about FEEA’s other programs are available directly from the organization.
